Kingsley Tufts and Kate Tufts Poetry Award Winners

Haven’t done this much on this blog, but I can’t resist.  I am so proud to call Marianne Boruch a friend.  We’ve worked together for most of the last two decades in the Warren Wilson MFA Program, and we’ve also been in residence together at the Ragdale Foundation’s artist retreat in Lake Forest, IL.  Marianne is an amazing poet, wonderful teacher, and just a great spirit to be around.  Today she was awarded the $100,000 Kingsley Tufts Award for her poetry collection The Book of Hours (2011, Copper Canyon Press).

Congratulations to her.  This is a much deserved prize.

And in the week’s most important news, after a month of serious slacking and marginally abysmal nutrition, I got myself back to the gym this morning. A most neglected theme on this blog is “My Trainer Derek,” and if for no other reason than to keep myself motivated on the treadmill and disciplined in the snack aisle, I intend to pay a lot more attention to this topic in the months ahead.

Hard at Work in North Carolina

Continuing the theme of circling, once again spending the week working at Warren Wilson College.

As can be seen in this photo and as documented by the Princeton Review, Warren Wilson undergrads are the diametric opposites of SMU students in every way.  At SMU our maids milk the cows.

Having a wonderful time as the Writer in Residence.  I’m enjoying getting to know some of the undergrads. They are an inspiring lot.
