Let’s Get This Done

Let’s Get This Done

Visiting Facebook these days is like trying to walk around downtown: Everybody’s got their hands out. Like you, I tend to avert my eyes from the beggars (and the posts) and scan the block ahead for something less guilt-inducing to focus on.

Here’s the thing: Some people really need the money, and not just for a beer. But how do you know that unless somebody tells you? That’s why I’m here.

The high quality and constantly underfunded New Rivers Press, publisher of A STAR IN THE FACE OF THE SKY, has launched an Indiegogo campaign in support of the publication of its 45th anniversary anthology. This is going to be a terrific book, and not only because it has an essay by ME in it.

Ironically enough, the essay concerns this very subject–the ongoing and constant struggle to keep our arts institutions afloat. You want to read it? The ONLY way that will happen is if you step up and send in a few dollars to get this thing on the press.

Click on the image below to go to the Indiegogo site and to make your donation today.  There’s some great swag available and it’s for a great cause.

Tell them “Dave” sent you.  Seriously.  Do.  They may send me a free bookmark.

A Stack of Stars

A Stack of Stars

Off to the post office today to mail copies of the book to various folks who have helped in various parts of the journey.  Somewhere in a warehouse in Minneapolis boxes of A Star in the Face of the Sky await their turn in a cue.  Any day now some nice folks with strong backs will sort them and stack them and point them in the direction of a guy or girl in a brown uniform.  Soon (we hope) they’ll find their way to a retailer near you.

Events, Events, Events

Events, Events, Events

In case it slipped my mind–and it did and does–I’ve got a book coming out!  To that end, I’ve updated the website with the events that are on the calendar through early next year.  All Minnesota and Dallas all the time, so far, (except that nice little side trip to NYC), but hoping to spread my wings a bit more in the spring.

And hoping to see you out there on the road.  (But not YOU.)

A Star in the Face of the Sky Wordle

A Star in the Face of the Sky Wordle

The entire manuscript, but only the 100 most frequently used words.

I raised and lowered the number a dozen times before settling on the final count.  In the end, I opted for the one that best highlighted the heart of the novel–the names of those six characters who for so long have been an important part of my life.  It’s almost graduation day for Daniel, Janet, Ari, Estelle, Keisha and Craig.

What He Meant To Say Was…

What He Meant To Say Was…

I hate the business side of being a writer.  Which is not the same things as: I hate the publishing business. (Which is what I said HERE.)  A necessary correction, for a person who wants to stay on the good side of his current as well as future potential publishers.

The Many Voices Project

The Many Voices Project

Today on the New Rivers website you will find a nice, concise history of the Minnesota Voices–now Many Voices–Project, which since 1981 has brought to press the best new and emerging writers from the upper Midwest and, more recently, from around the nation.  With this week’s announcement of the current winners,  MVP titles total 130, and two of those books, I am most proud to be able to say, (#55  Right By My Side and #72  Heathens ) have my name on them.
