2012 in review

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog. Thanks to everyone who visited Face of the Sky this year. See you in 2013.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 4,100 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 7 years to get that many views.

It occurred to me today, many thousands of feet above the western United States, that last semester is over.  We, the youngins and I, lurched into the station like some poorly designed theme park ride, so anticlimactic it was that we stared at the operators not quite believing that’s all there was to it.

Drive, He Said

I learned years ago the powerful connection, for me at least, between driving and creativity. My first novel, Right By My Side, popped into my head as I drove along the Great River Road in Southern Wisconsin. I don’t where it came from and I have never asked. It doesn’t matter. There it was, and here it is:

right by my side

Today, once again driving to St. Louis, a different river to the right, a new story swarmed my imagination. It is already mostly written, some of it actually here on the next screen. The irony: my ten days of writing retreat were comparatively fallow, at least as far as new work is concerned.

Goodbye, Eureka Springs

A reason I am sad to leave and will be back soon:

From the Lovely County Citizen (Police) Dispatch Desk.  Unedited (except for one comma):

December 4

12:19 am – A caller from a local trailer park lodged a complaint against neighbors who were playing loud music, talking loud, and drinking loud.  The officer told them to take it all down a notch, which they did.
